The Mobile Phone Is Now The Frontline Of Network Security
25th September 2008

Data Select (the mobile distribution company owned by Peter Jones of TV's Dragons' Den fame) has launched Accode, a new security service that uses the mobile phone to protect companies' corporate networks or portals.  The service works by using a security application on customers' mobile phones to create a ‘one time passcode', which is then entered into users existing VPN (Virtual Private Network) clients on their laptops in place of their existing password.  By using the service, network security is much improved since each passcode is only used once, removing the threat presented by malicious ‘phishing' or Trojan attacks.

The launch is as a result of a recent deal between Mobile Managed Services, the mobile solution division of Data Select, and Monitise Group, the mobile money experts.  Accode is based on the same secure technology used in Monitise's award-winning mobile banking service, MONILINK, offering SMEs and enterprises the same level of security that has been adopted by the UK's banks.

The service is much more user friendly than the token based security services used by many large corporates, since it can be set-up ‘over the air' in seconds and does not require employees to carry another piece of hardware whenever they need to connect to their company network.  The service is also fully managed by Mobile Managed Services so no significant in-house IT resources are required to roll it out.

Recent user trials have confirmed that Accode reduces the costs associated with ‘second factor' security services by 50% when compared to standard token based solutions.   The service is always available through both ‘online and ‘offline' capability, therefore allowing the service to work even in areas with no network coverage.  It can even be customised with the customer's brand so it's consistent with companies' existing network tools.

Andy Tow, Managing Director Mobile Managed Services said: "Security is of paramount importance to our customers. However, with mobile working now part of the day to day routine for many people, VPN or portal access is now essential to the success of most businesses.

"Accode allows our customers to offer their staff regulated VPN or portal access without compromising on either security or convenience.  It meets the high security standards demanded today and by delivering the service on their existing mobile phones it removes the need for additional spend on hardware."

Alastair Lukies, Chief Executive, Monitise Group added: "Mobile data technology has delivered massive business advantages over the past few years, allowing workers, suppliers and consultants to access central resources no matter where they are.  However, as the usage of such systems has increased, the threats have increased alongside it.  With the mobile handset absolutely central to the working lives of most people today, the addition of tools that help protect companies' information makes perfect sense."
